No more plastic wrap, please

Environment submitted by falbert May 22

In the last shipment of computers I received I was shocked by the amount of plastic wrap used for items like power cords, USB cables, VGA/DVI cables. Do these items really need to be individually wrapped in a plastic bag. I can just imagine the tons of plastic used by Dell annually...

Make Physical Manuals An Option

Environment, Service and Support submitted by joyscant1980 Jun 25

This is not my idea, it was mentioned by roguent in "No more plastic wrap, please" on June 12. Where I disagree with the idea of no manuals, I do agree that if you do not want to receive the physical manual, you should not have to.

I honestly would love to have a manual that I can hold in my hand because if I can't get onto the internet to use the website, I will still be able to access the manual. But I know I am not like everyone so make it an option to forego the manuals or even choose the type of manual you want, if you want the physical manual or do you want it as a .pdf document on your desktop.

If you are going to have the option to forego the manuals, have receiving the manuals as the default and have the customer deselect it so to avoid persons not getting the manual when they wanted it. Comment »

Make the Dell E a model 'Green Computer'

Environment submitted by badblood Jun 24

Can Dell make the 'Dell E' from recycled plastics, can it avoid many of the nasty metals and chemicals that go into making bad computers. Can Dell package the Dell E in less materials, will that material be recycled..?

Can Dell certify that the Dell E is a Green computer? 1 Comment »

Dell is going green

Environment submitted by waymonwhite 3:44pm

We are consistently being messaged to conserve enregy, by unplugging all electrical appliances when not in use.
I would like to have an outlet adapter that would discontinue the electrical bleed, when the appliance is turn off.

This could be accomplished through an adapter or through the appliance itself having an anti-electrical bleed switch. Comment »

Surf the net while you workout!

Environment submitted by jacqsj14 3 days ago

I work at the YMCA where people spend hours going now where on treadmills. Humans are generating lots of energy going now where on bikes, elliptical machines, treadmills etc. Develop a bike/treadmill that generates enough power to run a computer on board so people can surf the net while they workout or email clients etc. The epitomy of multi-tasking! Even better the power generated can be used to run all the computers in a gym facility. 3 Comments »

HHO Fuel Cell ... Develop One Please!

Environment, New Product Ideas submitted by aikiwolfie Jun 22

HHO fuel cells are the future. Unless you have been living in a cave in Afghanistan you will have noticed YouTube is full of videos demonstrating this technology. Now choosing to avoid the nutters that are more likely to blow themselves and you along with them to kingdom come, I've choose a slightly more reputable video to get the message across.

So how green are Dells green credentials? Do you have the bottle to get really serious about green IT technologies? 26 Comments »

Environmental Laptop Based on Solar Energy/Hydrogen Fuel Cell

Environment, Laptop Power submitted by gchakra 02/17/07 **UNDER REVIEW**

What's smart for the environment is smart for Dell. Dell should build units that are degradable or can be easily recycled. Sure, its going to be a little more expensive, but it will be a smart product. It will use a lot less energy. The laptops could have a solar panel or be powered by a hydrogen fuel cell. The first microelectronic implementation of a fuel cell will give Dell a tremendous marketing boost. It will be incredibly popular with kids in college.

Yellow Pages on every corner for directions

Environment, New Product Ideas submitted by tammylhoward 3 days ago

Cut out the printing of the yellow page book and make a electric book on the corner of the street for directions and locations of stores, gas station, and ect. This would also help with triffic and weather. This would be like a phone booth. 3 Comments »

"Trade In" Program

Advertising and Marketing, Environment, Sales Strategies submitted by john_saddington 02/19/07

I'd love to see a "Trade In" Program and/or initiative, where a customer who's been a long time customer could trade in an old system for a new one, or at least, a good sized discount.

I've got an old laptop and seriously need a new one. It's been out of warranty for a long time, but, would love to get a discount for a new one if I could trade it in.

This would also be environmentally healthy! 34 Comments »

PVC Free Computers

Environment submitted by badblood 07/01/07 **IN PROGRESS**

PVC and/or BFR are toxic chemicals used in your current manufacturing processes of Dell. Nokia recently phased out these chemicals and reached number one in the Greenpeace 'electronics guide'.

Stop using PVC! 13 Comments »

giving old computers to underpriveleged people

Environment, Education submitted by drorb73 May 25 **REVIEWED**

An acquaintance of mine is going to start college soon on financial aid, and does not have the resources to purchase a new computer. Currently lots of people send their old computers back to "recycling" programs whereby the machines are shipped to China where some kid breaks them open bare-handed. Instead, computer manufacturers could reinstall some reasonable software on them and give them away (perhaps at a token cost) to under-priveleged people here in developed countries. I have no doubt that lots of perfectly decent 3 year old computers get junked - and there are lots of poor Americans and Europeans that could use these machines for another several years. Wouldn't this be more "green"? Thanks!

Give Back

Environment, Sales Strategies submitted by geralddarden May 30

Offer a trade in discount for a previous Dell purchase. Doesn't have to be much, just to show you take care of you previous customers. You can take the old Dell computers, and exchage them with recycling centers like:

http://www.secondrotation.com/

or

http://www.buymytronics.com/

You make money, and customers get a warm fuzzy for helping the environment, and a small discount. 1 Comment »

Advertise your Linux boxes as "Green"

Advertising and Marketing, Environment, Linux submitted by jmxz Jun 9

Network World has an interesting article here

" tests show that Red Hat Linux pulls as much as 12% less power than Windows 2008 on identical hardware"

With all the media excitement surrounding Green and Environmental issues, you could advertise how Green Dell is even in it's software selections.

If Dell ships 50_000_000 computers per year, and these computers live an average of 4 years each , and each computer uses 100W, it seems Dell could save the world

50_000_000 computers *
4 years each * 365 days/year * 24 hours/day *
100 Watts / computer *
0.12 (percent savings using Red Hat)
== 21024000000000 Watts

which is a number too big for me to count. Is that 21 Tera-watt-hours? Even if my math's off by 10000 Dell could save many giga-watt-hours. And that's only one year's production. 3 Comments »

Sell more desktops without monitors, keyboards, etc

Desktops, Environment, Sales Strategies submitted by gordonbrown77 02/16/07 **COMING SOON**

Make it an option to not get things people may already have when upgrading a PC such as monitors, mouse, keyboard. This would be good environmentally and save people some money if they already have theae things and will not be keeping the old PC. 33 Comments »

Recycle & refurbish old Dell PCs back to Dell for 10% discount

Environment submitted by reg 05/18/07

Recycle your old Dell back to Dell for a 10% discount on new equipment. Dell can then secure overwrite erase the hard drive, install Ubuntu + hardware drivers, then donate the hardware to unemployment, food stamp, and welfare offices Nationwide. The social services offices then can pass out the refurbished used equipment to its clients, and Dell can be given BIG tax breaks by the State and Federal Systems.

1. Recycle - Turn it in, don't landfill it.
2. Reuse - There is still life left in that old hardware
3. Reduce - Buy new electronics less often, get 5 years use out of every PC.
4. Refuse - wasteful spending, wasteful practices & wasteful companies.
5. Refute - Once wasteful practices or procedures are identified, correct the problem with Action! 58 Comments »

Biodegradable Packing material

Environment submitted by ewagnerjr2000 04/19/07 **UNDER REVIEW**

When I received my 32" lcd screen it had an extremely large amount of Styrofoam. Dell is working to be environmentally friendly, maybe they should consider a better packing material at least one that will biodegrade.

ULV - Ultra Low Voltage Notebook Computer

Environment, Laptop Power submitted by reg 06/06/07 **UNDER REVIEW**

Intel and AMD have both been developing Ultra Low Voltage CPUs, computer chips that run on 1/5 of the power of traditional computer chips. The CPU is a good start, now Dell can work with Intel and / or AMD to develop a FULLY ULV Notebook - ALL the subcomponents using significantly less power than standard notebook systems.

[Gateway's ULV CPU powered notebook.]

Another big component to change is the display, static 'ePaper' notebook screens that can maintain the image even when powered off. Electricity is only used when changing the display, and even then - power only used down to the pixel level, while non-changing pixels consume little or no power at all. Back-Lit by new ULV LEDs, that adjust their intensity based off of a ambient light sensor - using even less power when in a darker room, vs. a sunny patio. The screen size can be 12" widescreen, and still be able to provide a good movie viewing experience. No Hard Drive, No CD Drive - those power hungry components can be put into the ULV notebook docking station. Use Flash drives and USB memory sticks only.

I would imagine a SSD Flash drive equipped notebook that could run for hours off of a single 9 volt battery (rechargeable of course!)

The New ULV Dell Notebook
With an ULV notebook, you can replace the battery with a water powered fuel cell, and cover the notebook screen lid with the new 40%+ efficient solar cells, and have the FIRST 'free power' ULV notebook on the market.

Samsung has been a leader in ULV technology in Korea:
