How IdeaStorm Works:

Consider the software used by Ubuntu BrainStorm to replace the SalesForce software powering IdeaStorm.

Ubuntu's BrainStorm seems to have similar capabilities to Dell's IdeaStorm. Notable differences are

1. BrainStorm has a search function that works very well; and a great Advanced Search that works even better. I imagine if IdeaStrom.

2. It feels much faster, though apparently having a *lot* more activity. Comments submitted 1 day ago have thousands of votes with roughly 100 comments. But every page I refresh there happens instantly.

3. I can provide attachments to ideas and link it to tickets in their support system.

4. It has a functioning "Report Duplicates" feature.

Humm... I'll have to wait on voting on this one till I test the Ubuntu BrainStorm a bit more.

So far I found its missing stats.

@jorge:
Yeah - it's still missing features (launched a couple days ago) but I assume they'll be improving it.

Moted it.

I tested the site and I have to demote. On that site there is no "Preview" button. I cannot edit comments. I cannot select multiple categories.

ideastorm is much better than brainstorm. I hate to say it but it's true. Brainstorm has insufficient categories, no user statistics, no dashboard, no way to track ideas you've commented on or posted. The only thing it has that ideastorm has is a marginally better search engine and the points reflect one vote = one point, unlike here where one vote = 10 points (which is basically a lie).

I hope it will get better, but right now brainstorm has nothing to offer, it's a poor cousin. So I will refrain from voting until it's had a couple of months to improve...

Oh by the way they've started with no moderator communication. Terribly annoying. They have a lot to learn. God also most of the ideas I don't understand. It really is a geek heaven Linux, no plave for types like me. Overall pretty ordinary effort.

Its still young, IS had nothing when we first were here, I remember when if you clicked too fast you'd post 4 ideas in a row, or comments, or could re-direct a web page elsewhere (not me), not to mention put an image in pretty much any spot you wanted, then we added our own Dell logo's to our usernames, that was pretty funny, then we added avatars, no moderator (HA!), we could use audio links and have sounds played "Kaaahhhnnn!!!" who remembers that! We also had a ton of funny ideas, all gone now. Agh the good old days...

too young? They copied the idea off Dell by admission, yet they didn't bother to copy the improvements. They are about to repeat history.

Even if they do improve the site, yee-gads, those Linux kids are a real boring bunch.

we did have fun, but it's all gone now......I am sad now. I can't even post my compubeaver anymore. That was a legit idea.

badblood, you just need to work on it, it needs some fine tuning but I'm sure you'll get it right eventually. If you don't I'll do it.

I've been officially told by Dell that its 'gross'. I am sure Apple would see its merits.....if it was painted white and had an i in front....

They just added a bunch of cool features, talk about feature rich now! More than IS. All the sorting and viewing categories we've wanted all a long and they're only how old now?

wow much better in only a couple of working days. If they put some user stats in there, a few more categories and the ability to track ideas you are involved with they will overtake Ideastorm in no time.

I am almost ready to vote.......

@badblood: "If they put some user stats in there, a few more categories and the ability to track ideas you are involved with they will overtake Ideastorm in no time."

If you submit those as Ideas there, they're likely to address them - either by implementing them or by telling the submitter why they aren't.

It's pretty hard to justify paying salesforce when you can get an equivalent (soon to be superior) product for free.

@badblood: "It's pretty hard to justify paying salesforce when you can get an equivalent (soon to be superior) product for free."

Yet don't people do that all the time with OS software? Perhaps the same conspiracy theory explains both.

I wonder if Salesforce pays Dell more for that "powered by salesforce.com" logo in the right column of IdeaStorm than Dell pays for the use of it.

the salesforce logo is a big logo isn't it.

After one week looking into brainstorm it is clearly moderated and maintained. Duplicates are swiftly dealt with, ideas are given status tags within hours, fixes to the site are dealt with a matter of days or hours. I'm impressed. They have really gone into the project knowing what's a stake and understanding what's expected of them. Great job.

@badblood:
Though they do have the annoying "my idea vanishd because it was merged into a not-quite-a-duplicate-but-kinda-similar idea" situation that's here too. Perhaps that's unavoidable - but I'd prefer if the old Idea stayed around with a status of "merged with the similar idea [link to similar idea]" instead of just silently vanishing.

Hey - Starbucks has an salesforce-powered-ideastorm

http://mystarbucksidea.force.com/home/home.jsp ...

One thing that's interesting is that the starbucks one ends in .jsp (which is often "java server pages") but the Dell one for a long time ran Mongrel (http://toolbar.netcraft.com/site_report?url=http: ...) which is typically a Ruby infrastructure.

hmmm I found this Company giving similar product which leaves IDEASTORM & BRAINSTORM much behind....n I m sure they r much lesss costly as well....

www.diesis.yousuggest.us

product name is yousuggest->us :)

I would demote both ideastorm & brainstorm, since its time to encourage more people into this thing...:D
